How Many Days Do You Need in Koh Samui?

Three days covers the Ang Thong boat day, the monastery and a night market; five adds Muay Thai, a cooking class and Koh Phangan. A day-by-day plan.

Updated October 2026

Three full days if you are coming for the White Lotus places. Five if you want the island at a slower pace, with a night at the fights, a cooking class and a day on Koh Phangan. Fewer than three and the boat day eats your trip; more than five and you are on a beach holiday, which is a fine thing to be on.

An early-morning beach on Koh Samui with long-tail boats and leaning palms, the island a White Lotus trip is planned around
Three days covers the show's Samui and the marine park; five adds a fight night or a kitchen, and Koh Phangan.

The number turns on one fact. The best day on Samui for anyone who watched the show is a boat day to Ang Thong Marine Park, and it takes about ten hours from hotel pickup to drop-off. Everything else on the island fits around it.

How many days is ideal for Koh Samui?

Day 1: arrive, and the north coast

Most people fly. Samui’s airport is owned and run by Bangkok Airways, which flies most of the domestic routes in. The Four Seasons, the show’s resort, is about 21 km from the airport at the island’s north-west tip.

If you come overland, the ferries leave from Donsak on the mainland. Raja Ferry runs a car ferry to Lipa Noi and Seatran goes to Nathon, both about an hour and a half; the Lomprayah high-speed boat takes 45 minutes to an hour.

Spend the evening in Bophut. The night market at Fisherman’s Village is where the show filmed part of its Full Moon party, with real stallholders as extras. Check which nights it runs before you go.

Day 2: Ang Thong

The island day that earns its place. The limestone islands of the marine park are the backdrop to the guests’ arrival in episode one, and they are worth the trip without the show: kayaking through caves, a steep climb to the Emerald Lake, a viewpoint over 42 islands. The kayak day we recommend is from $83 with the park fee included, rated 4.7 over 855 reviews.

Do it early in your stay, so a cancelled sailing can move to another day. The park usually closes from 1 November to 15 December. The boat guide compares the three ways to go and says what the trip does not show.

Day 3: the monastery and the beach

Wat Phu Khao Thong in Mae Nam, the temple with the dragon staircase, played Piper’s monastery. It is on the north coast, and you can visit it on your own. Then Choeng Mon Beach, which carried more of the Full Moon episode’s party scenes.

If you have only three days, finish here. You have covered the main Samui places from the show that are open to anyone.

Day 4: a fight or a kitchen

The Muay Thai night in the show was filmed in Patong, on Phuket, at Bangla Boxing Stadium. Samui’s stadiums give you the same evening in a different ring:

The cooking classes have no link to the show and do not need one. A class with a Samui family at Go Samui Cook is from $74, rated 5.0 over 528 reviews; the Lamai school’s masterclass by the sea is from $75, 4.9 over 240.

For a half day of temples, the island temple tour is from $23 and covers the Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem and Na Muang waterfall. It does not go to the show’s monastery, and no source puts either of its famous temples on screen.

Day 5: Koh Phangan

Haad Rin, the beach where the real Full Moon Party happens, appears briefly in the show. The Haad Rin Queen boat goes straight there from Big Buddha Pier in 25 to 50 minutes, several times a day, with sailings at 10:30 and 17:00 among them; the fare has been quoted at THB 200. Other boats from Bangrak and Nathon land at Thong Sala, not Haad Rin. If you want to be there for a party night, check the Full Moon Party calendar; we do not print dates we have not read.

If you only have two days

Two days can work, but only one way round. Give the first to Ang Thong, because it is the one thing on the list that has to be booked, depends on the sea and takes the whole day. Give the second to the north coast: the monastery in the morning, the beach in the afternoon, Fisherman’s Village at night. You will miss the fights, the cooking and Koh Phangan, and you will have no spare day if the boat is cancelled.

When the number changes

  • November to mid-December is the Gulf coast’s wettest stretch, and it peaks in November. The marine park is usually closed and ferries get cancelled in rough seas. If that is when you can travel, add a day.
  • January to April is the driest time on Samui. May to September is mostly dry too.
  • If you are also going to Phuket for the stadium and the yacht marina, that is a flight, not a day trip. Phuket or Koh Samui helps you split the time.
  • Staying at the Four Seasons changes the plan less than you would think. You still need a boat for Ang Thong, the hotel’s own or a tour’s. What a night there costs is set out on its own page, with dated figures.

For where everything else was filmed, the Phuket and Bangkok scenes included, see the filming locations guide. The homepage has the boat day’s calendar.
