The Koh Samui Jungle Safari: A 4x4 Day Round the Island's Interior

A Samui jungle safari is a 4x4 day of rocks, a waterfall swim, the mummified monk, a hilltop lunch and the Secret Buddha Garden, not a wildlife drive. From $40.

Updated October 2026

A “jungle safari” on Koh Samui is not a wildlife drive. It is a full day in an open 4x4 truck round the island’s hilly interior: a waterfall swim, a few famous stops, lunch with a view and a climb up dirt tracks most rental cars could not manage. Mr Ung’s, the most booked, says so in its own listing: no safaris “which involve animals in captivity”.

An illustration. A Samui jungle safari is a 4x4 day of viewpoints, a waterfall and temples, not a wildlife drive.

If you want to see the inside of the island in one go without driving it yourself, it is a fun, social day. Reviewers bring up the guides’ energy and, more than once, a water fight between trucks.

Mr Ung’s day, stop by stop

From $48 with 3,445 reviews at 4.7, pickup from Maenam, Bophut, Choeng Mon, Chaweng and Lamai, back around 5 pm. The listing runs in this order:

  • The Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks (Hin Ta and Hin Yai) on the south-east coast, and a market nearby.
  • An hour at Na Muang waterfall, which the listing calls the island’s biggest, with time to swim.
  • The mummified monk, a revered sight in a glass case at a temple.
  • The 4x4 climb into the hills past coconut farms, and a Thai lunch at a mountain-top restaurant.
  • The Secret Buddha Garden, full of carved stone statues.
  • The hilltop Buddha at Wat Teepangkorn, with the view across the island. This is not the Big Buddha temple near Bophut; that one is on the temple tour.

Water, lunch and entrance fees are included. It is not suitable for pregnant women, people with back problems or wheelchair users, and children need an adult with them. Cruise passengers must book the cruise option.

The waterfall can be low

Na Muang is fed by rain, so it is at its best after the wet months. One September reviewer found it “dry”. The swim is a stop on the day, not the point of it.

Other safaris

Major Safari’s 4x4 day is cheaper, from $40 (4.5 over 1,006 reviews), and swaps the monk for a coconut and rubber plantation and a Chinese shrine. Both let you ride up on the roof seats. Happy Samui’s day, from $56 (4.8 over 2,687), adds a stop at Samui Elephant Home to prepare food and feed the elephants. If that matters to you, read what makes an elephant sanctuary ethical first.

Which month to avoid on Koh Samui?

November, for most people. The Gulf side’s wet season runs from October to December and peaks in November, when rough seas also cancel boats. A jungle day copes with rain better than a boat day does, so it is a good thing to have up your sleeve in those weeks. January to April is the driest stretch.

For a half day in the hills with more adrenaline, there is the Tree Bridge zipline, and how many days in Koh Samui fits a jungle day into a week.
