Phuket or Koh Samui: Which Is Better for White Lotus Fans?
Samui, for most fans: the resort, the lobby, the monastery and the Ang Thong arrival are there. Phuket has the fight, the yacht and Belinda's spa.
For a White Lotus trip, Koh Samui. The resort the show was built around is there, and so are most of the places from it you can actually visit. Phuket has three scenes people remember, and if one of those is the reason you are going, Phuket is your island.

That is the short version. The longer one depends on which season you watched for, and which month you can travel.
What’s nicer, Phuket or Koh Samui?
Nicer is a matter of taste, and the two islands are not trying to be the same thing. Phuket is the larger island, on the Andaman Sea; Samui is the smaller one, in the Gulf of Thailand. Neither is the better island in any way we can measure. For this trip the useful question is narrower: which one has the show?
What Samui has
The core of the season. The White Lotus resort is mostly the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui at the island’s north-west tip: the pool, the beach, the villas, the restaurant and the gym with its boxing ring. The villas on screen are real guest villas. Two other hotels on the island filled in: Anantara Bophut for the lobby, the entrance and the jewellery shop, and Anantara Lawana in Chaweng for the bar.
Beyond the hotels:
- Wat Phu Khao Thong in Mae Nam, Piper’s monastery.
- The Samui Snake Farm.
- The night market at Fisherman’s Village in Bophut and Choeng Mon Beach, the main pieces of the Full Moon party.
- Haad Rin on Koh Phangan, a short boat ride across, which appears briefly.
- Ang Thong Marine Park, behind the guests’ boat as they arrive in episode one.
That last one is the trip most fans end up taking. The kayak day to Ang Thong is from $83, rated 4.7 over 855 reviews, with the park fee included.
What Phuket has
Three things, and they are big ones:
- The Muay Thai night. Kate, Laurie and Jaclyn’s evening with Valentin was filmed at Bangla Boxing Stadium in Patong. It was not shot on Samui, and it was not shot in Bangkok.
- Belinda’s wellness centre, at Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas. Its owner says she stayed in the Lotus Villa, which you can book.
- The yacht. Gary’s boat was moored at Phuket Yacht Haven Marina, and a Phuket charter operator places the sequence in Phang Nga Bay.
Phuket also supplied Rosewood Phuket’s Ta Khai restaurant for dinner scenes, Ya Nui Beach for part of the arrival, and Café del Mar in Kamala for part of the party.
The Ratliffs, for the record, did not stay on Phuket. Their villa is at the Four Seasons on Samui.
The seasons run opposite
This matters more than any filming location. The two islands sit on different seas. Samui is in the Gulf of Thailand, and its wet season runs from October to December, wettest in November. January to April is its driest stretch, and May to September is mostly dry. Phuket is on the Andaman Sea, whose weather runs the other way round: its wetter months fall when Samui is mostly dry.
Two practical results. Ang Thong Marine Park usually closes from 1 November to 15 December, so a Samui trip in those weeks loses its best day. And rough seas in that period also cancel ferries in the Gulf.
If November or early December is your only window, Phuket is the safer island for the trip, and you give up the resort and Ang Thong to get it. Outside those weeks, Samui wins for this trip.
What the show did to each island
Both got a lift in interest. Expedia told ABC News that flight searches for March and April 2025, against the year before, were up 45% for Phuket and 30% for Koh Samui. The owner of the three Anantara hotels in the show reported web traffic up 104% and direct online bookings up 41% in February 2025.
None of that showed up in Thailand’s total. The country’s foreign arrivals fell 7.23% in 2025, to 32.97 million, on an aggregator’s count of the official figures, mostly because of a drop in visitors from China. The White Lotus effect was a story about two islands and a handful of expensive hotels, not about the country.
Can you do both?
Yes, but plan it as two stops. Phuket’s locations are a flight from Samui, not a day out. Samui’s airport is owned and run by Bangkok Airways, which flies most of the domestic routes into it. Give Samui three to five days first, then add Phuket nights for the stadium and the coast.
If you are going to Bangkok as well, the Mandarin Oriental is the only hotel there the show used, for the lobby, the Bamboo Bar and a room.
